Election season starts today

Today is the first day candidates can circulate and file nomination petitions to run in the 2021 primary election.

Coming off a tumultuous presidential election year, this year’s elections will focus on local races.

Many mayors, council members, supervisors, commissioners and others who have more of a direct impact on how the Mon Valley is run will be elected in November, but first they must make it past the May 18 primary.

Candidates are asked to wear masks if they choose to circulate petitions door to door and to maintain a distance of 6 feet. The Department of State also recommends asking signers to use their own pens and advises petitioners to carry hand sanitizer with them.

They have until March 9 to file those petitions, and others will have until March 16 to make objections.

Candidates who file petitions can withdraw them up to March 24.

In the Mon Valley, all our local municipalities will have positions open on the ballots.
