Valentine’s Day will be a little sweeter this year for those who call the Residence at Hilltop home, thanks to a kind gesture by Charleroi Area third-grade students.
Holly Caruso, a teacher at the elementary center, said to keep students safe they had to think outside of their valentines card boxes this year.
Instead of a traditional party to celebrate the holiday, students pulled out their Chromebooks, and with the help of teachers, created digital valentines that will be emailed to patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to brighten their spirits.
“We did not want to bring in valentines or treats for a traditional party the way we usually do it, but still wanted the kids to be able to do something special,” Caruso said.
Once on St. Jude’s website, the students were able to choose a virtual valentine from a template.
After sending out digital cards, they got to work the old-fashioned way, grabbing scissors, crayons, markers and paper to craft their own valentines for the Residence at Hilltop in Monongahela.
All third-grade classes worked to make the cards, about 120 total, which Caruso will drop off in time for Valentine’s Day.
“Since we were not able to bring in cards for each other in class, we decided to make something special for those who are not able to be with their families and friends,” she said. “The kids really loved it. They knew it was something special and not something we do every year, so that made them excited.”
