NBV may cut ties with refuse authority

North Belle Vernon may decide to end its relationship with the Mon Valley Refuse Authority.

At Tuesday’s meeting, council discussed separating from the authority to find its own garbage collector when a six-year contract expires at the end of this year.

Council President Brett Berish said the borough has been involved with the authority as long as he has been on council, which dates back to 2007.

Currently, the borough has a contract with the authority, which also has representatives from Monessen, who decide which company will collect garbage in the municipalities.

“There are garbage issues every month,” Berish said. “It’s always something.”

The refuse authority recently reached out to council for information regarding the number of residential and commercial garbage accounts in the borough as it prepares to negotiate contracts. Information must be submitted by March 15.

Berish suggested doing some research before making a decision.

The borough has 937 residential accounts and 92 commercial accounts, but some commercial properties that have dumpsters have experienced problems with billing for both commercial and residential collection.

Council agreed to shop around before deciding to remove the borough from the authority.
