Two injured in I-70 accident

A member of the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Company who stopped on the Belle Vernon-Speers Bridge Saturday to help a fellow motorist whose car had become disabled is one of two people struck by a vehicle that was driving by, according to first responders.
State police Trooper Robert Broadwater said neither of the individuals suffered life-threatening injuries, but both were hospitalized.
The crash occurred around 6:45 a.m. on Interstate 70, causing the eastbound lanes to be shut down for several hours at the border of Westmoreland and Washington counties.
Photos taken by firefighters with Rostraver Central Fire Department showed three vehicles with heavy damage from the accident.
Broadwater said a Chrysler Town and Country minivan operated by a 53-year-old man became disabled in the left lane of the bridge and the two men, ages 43 and 44, stopped in separate vehicles to help.
With three vehicles stopped in the left lane, a fourth vehicle collided with them, causing a chain reaction crash that pushed the parked vehicles into the two men who were helping, he said.
The names of the men who stopped to help have not been released.
Roscoe VFC revealed in a Facebook post Saturday afternoon that one of its members was one of the men injured.
“Please slow down, move over, pay attention,” the department stated. “This morning one of our own, while on his way to work stopped to render aid at a motor vehicle incident on Interstate 70. While doing so, was struck by another vehicle. He was transferred to a Pittsburgh trauma center, fortunately he is conscious and alert. Please keep him, his family, and friends along with others involved in this accident in your continued thoughts and prayers.”
