A dominating second half performance led the Serra Catholic to a 60-25 victory over Frazier, keeping the Eagles undefeated on the season with the win Thursday in Section 2-2A girls basketball action.
The Commodores scored just five points in the entire second half, as Serra Catholic outscored them 29-5, including holding Frazier off the board entirely in the third quarter.
But the game wasn’t a runaway win for the Eagles by any means.
It was an ugly opening quarter as neither team found its offensive rhythm. A 6-0 run in the middle of the frame out Serra Catholic ahead 10-7, two of those baskets coming from senior Nicole Pawlowski, who finished the quarter with eight points.
The Eagles led Frazier 15-11 after one, a tighter contest in the early going than the opening meeting of the year, where Serra took a commanding 14-2 lead in the first.
“That was one of our big goals was to start a little bit faster. We’ve seen that a lot this year, where we’ve had some slower starts,” said Frazier head coach Winston Shaulis.
“You’ve got to give Frazier credit because they came to play. They came prepared. They banged the boards and knocked down some nice shots from the outside, so we had to make some adjustments and that obviously worked to our benefit,” said Serra Catholic head coach Bill Cleary.
Frazier scored the first field goal of the second, a basket by Commodores senior Kendall Shaporka, to make it a two-point game.
Serra Catholic went on a 10-2 run from there with scoring from all across the Eagles lineup, to take a 10-point lead, 25-15, halfway through the quarter.
The Eagles continued to hold their lead, as Chloe Pordash scored six of her 11 first half points to close the half with a 31-20 lead.
The third quarter was all Serra Catholic. Literally.
The Eagles held Frazier scoreless, putting up a 17-0 score in the third, to open up a 48-20 lead.
