Thelma F. Slavic – West Newton

Thelma F. Slavic, 97, of West Newton, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2021. Born in Rostraver Township on Nov. 12, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Catherine Amy Fell Harris. Thelma was a member of St. Basil the Great Russian Orthodox Church in Rostraver. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed reading, crocheting and spending time with family. She is survived by her children, Frances E. Sabo of West Newton, Cathy M. Hanna of Ravenna, Ohio, Virginia M. “Ginny” Stewart of Hardinsburg, Ky., and David G. Slavic of West Newton; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Slavic; sons, Thomas G. Slavic Sr. and Albert E. Slavic; a granddaughter; and siblings, Mary Helen Volk, Hazel Virginia Harris, Catherine Margaret Mehalek, Mehala Strenske, Harriet Holbrook, Thomas Harris and Joan Harris. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at JAMES C. STUMP FUNERAL HOME INC., 580 Circle Drive, Rostraver Township, 724-929-7934, www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com, where a blessing service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at St. Basil the Great Russian Orthodox Church, 1449 Ridge Road, Rostraver Township, with Father Joseph Romanchak officiating. Interment will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park. A Parastas service will be held in the funeral home at 7 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Basil the Great Russian Orthodox Church. Everyone attending the visitation and services must wear a mask and practice social distancing. Only 40 people are permitted in the funeral home at a time.
