Yough’s Waldier heading north to Edinboro

When CJ Waldier began his high school football career at Yough, he wasn’t viewed as being much of a threat on the offensive side of the ball.

Waldier played mostly free safety during his freshman and sophomore campaigns on Cougar Mountain before becoming a true wideout during his junior season.

That’s when everyone took notice, and saw the type of playmaker he could be with the ball in his hands.

“Junior year I just started to excel at wide receiver and everything took off from there,” Waldier said. “I was putting up pretty good numbers but not too many recruiters took notice.”

As he continued to put up big numbers week in and week out during Yough’s COVID-shortened season this past fall, offers began to pour in for Waldier.

And in mid-January, he made his collegiate decision by committing to continue his academic and athletic careers at Division II Edinboro University.

Waldier, a 6-2, 200-pound wide receiver who was recruited as an athlete, will play for head coach Jake Nulph and the Fighting Scots, who compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

“I have always dreamed of playing college football,” said Waldier, the son of Chris and Theresa Waldier of Clairton. “I worked so hard to get here but I know I have to work even harder to actually play at the next level.”

In total, Waldier garnered 10 offers to play at the next level, including a pair from Division I programs.

“Edinboro stood out because of the great coaching staff, great facilities, and a chance to play right away,” said Waldier, who plans to major in nursing. “I chose Edinboro because it was the place where I felt most wanted.”
