The Ringgold School District Police Department will hold an active shooter drill at the middle school and high school on Feb. 3.
The training will involve only the two schools’ staff and faculty. Students will not be included, as the event will take place during the day’s two-hour delay for staff development.
Ringgold School District Police Chief Clayton Shell said the training is held annually, and this marks the third consecutive year the drills will take place at the schools.
“It’s a good opportunity for the principals to see the training,” he said.
For the training, staff and faculty will participate in a simulated active shooter event and then react according to the district’s ALICE training and Emergency Preparedness Plan.
Shell explained that ALICE means alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate.
“An officer will walk through the school firing blanks,” Shell said. “This gives teachers the chance to hear and smell that type of activity.”
After the simulation, staff and officers will gather to debrief together to learn from the experience and further build upon the training they received.
