Have a passion for collecting rare coins, learning about gold and silver or just finding old coins in your loose change at the end of the day?
If so, the Mon Valley Coin Club might just be your ticket to numismatic nirvana.
The club meets on the third Thursday of each month at VFW Post 1409 on E. Main Street in Monongahela. During club meetings, its members give lectures on historical topics such as hunting for gold in the 1860s, collecting silver dollars and coal mining scrips.
Dues are $7 per year, and anyone from the Mon Valley is invited to become a member.
The club also holds raffles during its meetings where members can win collectible coins and discuss their latest finds.
According to club vice president and Charleroi resident Tom Corey, the club moved to Monongahela two years ago after holding its meetings at the Charleroi Senior Center since 1958.
“The VFW lets us use this room for free as a community service,” said Corey, a club member for 15 years.
