Minimal practices, no scrimmages, no problem for the Serra Catholic girls basketball team.
The highly touted Eagles finally got on the court Monday and walked out of Frazier’s DiVirgilio Field House with a 51-29 victory in the teams’ Section 2-2A opener.
“We had our moments, but I thought we played pretty well,” longtime Serra Catholic head coach Bill Cleary said. “We made some spotty decisions with the ball on the offensive end at times. I thought we had a good start in each half and that really carried us.”
Serra Catholic (1-0, 1-0) rolled out to a 14-2 lead after the first quarter. It was the second time this season the Commodores scored only two points in the opening quarter of a game.
“Tonight and Friday night we only put up two points in the first. We got off to a really bad start,” Commodores coach Winston Shaulis said. “We really struggled early from the free throw line and we had a hard time in our offense just getting set up. It just really seemed like we stalled out there.”
The Commodores (0-3, 0-1) trailed 27-12 at the half, but shot only 3 of 11 from the charity stripe. They were in the double bonus most of the second quarter.
“We really had issues at the line. Those are free points and you have to cash in on them against a good team like that,” Shaulis said.
