Walter Malcolm “Mac” Stewart, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020.  He was born Jan. 12, 1935, in Frank, Elizabeth Township, son of the late Walter Gulfullen Stewart and Ruth Alma Swope Stewart. Known as “Stew” to the guys from U.S. Steel, Clairton works, from where he retired in Jan. 1997, after 44 years of service as a motor inspector, electrician and later an expeditor. Known as “Mayor Mac” by all that grew up and hung out in Sutersville during the late 70s and early 80s. Walter served in the U.S. Army 4th Armored Division from March 1957 through July 1958. Growing up in Blythedale, he attended McKeesport and then Elizabeth High School. He was a member of the Boys Scouts and a Webelos den leader. Mac served as mayor of Sutersville from 1974 through 1986, being responsible for many improvements in the borough including the Sutersville Park, obtaining the former Sutersville Grade School for use as the Sutersville Municipal Building and was instrumental in the replacement of the old Sutersville Bridge and many other improvements. As mayor he was a member of the Pennsylvania State Mayors Association, American Federation of Police and 5th District Democrat Committee. He was also a former member and past president of the West Newton Lions Club, former member of the Sutersville Fire Department, Sutersville Sportsman’s Club and Sutersville Moose Club. He played for Blythedale in the McKeesport Daily News baseball league and played semi-pro football during the late 50s and early 60s. He coached numerous youth baseball teams over the years and enjoyed playing basketball on the street with the neighborhood kids into his mid-50s. His biggest passion was playing golf and he was a longtime member of the Sutersville Moose Golf League, enjoying trips every summer with friends to Cross Creek Golf Course and later numerous courses near Bedford. Surviving are three sons, Gregory Scott Stewart, Brian Keith Stewart and Todd Michael Stewart; grandchildren, Joshua (Cassie) Stewart, Travis Stewart, Kristopher Stewart, Brianne Stewart (fiancé Brad), Derrick Stewart, Marissa Stewart (Andy) and Gage Stewart; sister-in-law, LaVerne Deutsch Varga; cousins, Roger Stewart and Edna Rhodes; special friends, Ramo and Donna Fontanesi; and numerous nieces and nephews; as well as his buddy, Blaze, who always made him smile and pushed him out of bed on many occasions. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Mae Deutsch Stewart; and a sister, Delores Stewart Shupe. Due to the pandemic, services and burial will be private.
