Charleroi OKs budget, but not unanimously

While Charleroi residents will not see an increase in their taxes next year, not everyone on council is on board with the spending plan.

The 2021 budget is approximately $2.6 million and will keep the current millage at 6.85. It will leave the borough approximately $30,000 in the black for 2021 if revenue figures add up. Council passed the plan during a special meeting Monday in a 4-1 vote.

President Mark Alterici, Vice President Jerry Jericho and council members Nancy Ellis and Jody Cheplic voted in favor of the budget, with Councilwoman Jeannine Motycki casting the lone no vote.

Motycki, who worked with former Councilwoman Heidi Cramer on the budget for months, said she could not support it. Cramer resigned from council last month and Frank Paterra was absent.

Motycki said anticipated revenue should have been cut back.

“It’s too high in light of the pandemic,” she said.

Earlier this month, Alterici explained that the 2021 budget was based on figures from the past two years, and is hopeful with vaccines being administered daily, that 2021 won’t resemble this year.

“As I said last week, I hope that Mark (Alterici) and Roberta (Doerfler) didn’t shoot the borough in the foot,” she said. “I wasn’t part of the income decision, even though I am supposedly the finance chair.”
