Grant helps coat drive continue

McKeesport Deputy fire Chief Jeff List said his fellow firefighters have found great joy over the past several years in giving new coats to youngsters in the McKeesport Area School District ahead of the winter break.

But he admits members of McKeesport Firefighters IAFF Local 10 feared the economic toll of coronavirus pandemic restrictions and shutdowns would result in the department not being able to raise enough money to supply students at Twin Rivers Elementary School with new winter coats in 2020.

On Tuesday, the city firefighters breathed a sigh of relief and were grinning from ear-to-ear when they delivered 350 coats to Twin Rivers, thanks to a grant from Operation Warm worth more than $4,000.

Operation Warm, a national nonprofit, provides brand-new winter coats to children in need across North America. The coats delivered Tuesday are being distributed to Twin Rivers students who do not have a winter coat.
