Elizabeth Borough is ready for today’s snowstorm with a full shipment of salt, a new loader and two new part-time, occasional street department employees for snow removal duty.
The two temporary employees were hired at Tuesday’s council meeting in anticipation of the storm. Both men are experienced plow operators, and while the borough has been advertising for a part-time employee at a rate of $12 per hour, council voted to hire the two occasional part-timers at a rate of $15 per hour because of their experience and the anticipated difficulty of the work.
Council President Chad Rager, who is also the borough fire chief, encouraged residents to watch out for one another and to pay particular attention to where generators are placed in the event of a power failure so fumes don’t enter homes.
A grant obtained through state Sen. James Brewster, D-McKeesport, covered $25,000 of the cost of the new front-end loader. Councilman Andy Miklos said the borough would have been in trouble without the new equipment because the old loader is not working.
