The Belle Vernon Area school board approved leave Monday for 17 employees in various positions throughout the district under the Family First Coronavirus Response Act.
Unpaid leave was granted to three additional employees.
District Superintendent Dr. Michele Dowell said the federal FFCRA provides leave for employees who need to take care of children due to the pandemic as well as those who may need to quarantine and those who are too sick to be able to work from home.
“We’ve had some people who have been too ill to work, so it’s something we need to consider,” Dowell said. “I could not run the buildings with the staff we have right now in all areas. It wouldn’t be safe to do it.”
The district is currently providing full remote education. All extracurricular activities have been canceled as Gov. Tom Wolf ordered last week.
It would be difficult, if not impossible, to operate the brick-and-mortar classrooms in district with the latest impact of the coronavirus.
The district is moving ahead with a plan to install cameras at the high school gymnasium and athletic field under an agreement with Pixellot. The school board Monday agreed to pay a $1,500 subscription fee that will permit members of the community to view the athletic events without paying for individual subscriptions.
“We will be getting out the information so parents can access and view sports once we are doing them again,” Dowell said.
