Forward Township police aid community at Christmas

A food and toy drive is underway in Forward Township in an effort to make sure that every family and every child in the township has a merry Christmas.

Sponsored by the township supervisors and police department, the drive is organized by Police Chief Travis Stoffer.

“It stems from the Thanksgiving dinners we did,” Stoffer said.

The police department delivered bags of food with everything needed for a complete turkey dinner to needy families in the township before Thanksgiving.

The Christmas effort started as a toy drive, but Stoffer said he didn’t want to see any children going hungry either. The pandemic has been rough on a number of families who may never have needed assistance in the past.

“There are a lot of working-class people, bartenders and waitresses from bars and restaurants that have basically been closed for the past year,” Stoffer said. “Another group that’s overlooked at this time of year is the elderly.”

Stoffer said members of the community have been very generous.

“It’s our residents taking care of our residents to make sure everyone has a good Christmas,” Stoffer said. “The support has been phenomenal. We’ve gotten more money and more toys than I thought possible.”
