Moving up a classification is tough in any sport, but moving up a classification with a young roster can be even more daunting.

The Bentworth girls’ basketball team and third-year coach Donna Salle knows the challenges ahead in this very unique 2020-21 season and are looking to solve some of those challenges with its youth and versatility.

“I really do like the makeup on this team,” Sallee said. “We played a lot of games over the summer at the Brownson House and competed pretty well. We have six incoming freshmen and all of those kids are hard workers.

“Everybody is facing those questions with COVID-19 and how many games they are going to get in, but you can’t focus on that. The kids have brought a really fun and energetic attitude into practices.”

The Bearcats will only have 13 players on their roster, including just one, active senior.

They will call Section 2-3A home the next two seasons, and will be joined in the section by Brownsville, Charleroi, McGuffey, South Park, Washington and Waynesburg.

“I know we will be in Triple-A and things will be tougher, but I still feel like there’s a lot for us to accomplish this winter,” Sallee stated. “Every team’s goal is to make the playoffs. But I feel like another goal is to win some section games and focus on being .500 in the section. We just want to improve and build this program.”
