Adam Alfer doesn’t talk much about lofty goals for his McKeesport wrestling team.
When trying to get a season finished during the height of a pandemic, it’s hard to look too far ahead.
“These guys are getting anxious. They’re putting in the work everyday hoping that they get on the mat soon. That’s what our goal is,” Alfer said.
“It’s day to day. You never know what’s gonna come tomorrow, whether we’re going to be shut down or the season is gonna be postponed or we’re gonna go.”
The Tigers have already felt the impact of the pandemic on their season.
Initially slated to start the season Dec. 11, they’ll instead start Dec. 29 due to cancellations and postponements.
Alfer has had a difficult time attracting as many wrestlers to the team, as usual. The Tigers have just 13 wrestlers on the team, whereas they might have 20 or more in a normal year.
Regardless, Alfer feels pretty good about his condensed squad.
“We have a lot of returning starters coming back,” Alfer said. “We also have a group of young, talented kids that we’re excited about.”
