Lions Club International believes that “when caring people join together, roll up their sleeves and take action to make their community better, it’s a beautiful thing — and an incredible feeling for everyone involved.”
Members of the Monessen Lions Club agree.
That’s why the club, which operates under the motto “We serve,” is calling on local residents to join them in being leaders and relationship builders in Monessen and the Mid-Mon Valley.
The club, which has about 35 members, is currently holding a membership drive.
“Monessen, as many local Lions Clubs, have found that membership has dropped off in recent years — partially because of the death of some of our older members,” Lion Tim Billick said.
Billick said adults of all ages are welcome to join the club, which — along with many other initiatives — focuses its efforts on raising money for local, national and international initiatives that seek to help prevent avoidable blindness and improve the quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired through initiatives like White Cane Day.
“When we’re out (collecting) for White Cane Day, I can’t tell you the amount of people who come through and they give a lot of money because the Lions have helped them,” Lion Jim Billick said. “A lot of people make sure to tell us. Most people give a dollar or car change, but some people put 20s in and say ‘You know, you guys helped me whenever we were down.’ We get a lot of good feedback about the club on White Cane Day.
