Katherine Dupay – Monongahela

By obits

Katherine Dupay, 101, of Monongahela, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020, at The Residence at Hilltop, Monongahela. Katherine was born May 24, 1919, in Weirton, W.Va., daughter of John and Katarina Wanchic. The family moved to Toronto, Ohio, where Katherine graduated from Toronto High School in 1936. That same year, she met and married her husband, Michael Dupay, on Sept. 5, 1936. They would have been married 60 years until his passing from Parkinson’s disease in June of 1996. Katherine was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Belle Vernon. She retired from Monongahela Valley Hospital in 1984 with 15 years of service as a food service supervisor. During her employment, she was recognized by the management board for successful completion of the management board seminars in supervisory training and management development. In July 1982, she completed the dietetic assistant independent study course through The University of Florida Division of Continuing Education, where she met the requirement for membership in the Hospital Institution and Education Food Service Society. On Katherine’s 100th birthday, she was honored on the Smucker’s portion of “The Today Show” with Al Roker recognizing individuals celebrating their 100th birthdays. Some of her favorite pastimes were browsing through cookbooks, as she was a wonderful cook and baker. She enjoyed watching QVC, especially the cooking segments, on Sunday afternoons and the Saturday cooking show on WQED. Katherine’s favorite snack was gummy bears, which she shared with anyone who entered her room at the Residence. Her most joy came from having her children and their families gather around her dining room table to enjoy the delicious foods she prepared. Her family never left her home without taking a “care package” of their favorite baked goods that she always had for them. Katherine will be deeply missed by her son, Michael (Joann) Dupay of Charleston, W.Va.; daughters, JoAnn (David) Metz of Monongahela and Janice (Robert) Waltz of Washington; her eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her five brothers, John, Stephen, Michael, Joseph and Nicholas Wanchic; as well as her grandson, John David Metz. The family would like to thank the entire staff at The Residence at Hilltop for the wonderful care she received while she lived there. Also, a special thanks to her nurse, Joan and aide, Nikki of Via-Quest Hospice for the additional care they provided. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Angel Fund at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, 217 Plainview Ave., Belle Vernon, PA 15012. Family and friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, 222 Mary St., Belle Vernon. Funeral service will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. at church with the Rev. Stephan Gresh officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery. In order to be compliant with our state guidelines concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, masks MUST be worn and social distancing maintained. The family would like to thank you in advance for your understanding. Arrangements are under the direction of FRYE FUNERAL HOME INC.
