Sandra A. Howard Kaviris – New York, formerly of Charleroi
Sandra A. Howard Kaviris, 77, born in Charleroi in December 1942, went to sleep peacefully on Nov. 28, 2020. She was predeceased by her mother, Loretta Jackson Howard, later Loretta Zaph; father, Kenneth Howard; stepfather, James Zaph Sr.; and brother, James Zaph Jr. She was also predeceased by her devoted husband of 56 years, George Kaviris, whom she met in Monessen and moved to live with in New York City. While in NYC, she was a longtime parishioner of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, New York, N.Y., and a member of their Philoptochos Society, serving many sponsored charitable events. She retired as a high school teacher’s aide, bringing computer skills to high school education for the first time. She also volunteered in the college-bound program preparing students for further education. In her earlier years, she enjoyed music and any kind of dancing (she had professional training), drawing (she was a natural), flowers (there was not one plant she could not revive) and animals (dogs and cats in particular). She is survived by her two married daughters, Athena Kaviris (and spouse, Ronald Collins) and Thalia Kaviris-Nikolopoulos (and spouse Christos Nikolopoulos); two grandchildren, (Zoe and Artemis Nikolopoulos); and nieces and nephews in the USA and Greece. Funeral proceedings will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020, at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Monessen. Burial in her family plot will follow immediately afterward at Monongahela Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name will be accepted by the St. Spryridon Greek Orthodox Church of Monessen.
