800 turkeys distributed at McKeesport giveaway

Thursday is Thanksgiving, and thanks to state Rep. Austin Davis and his staff, 800 families in the Mon Valley won’t have to worry whether they’ll have a turkey on their table.

Davis, a Democrat from McKeesport who was recently named chairman of the Allegheny County House Democratic Delegation, hosted a turkey giveaway Saturday in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania at the McKeesport Area High School parking lot.

He said 800 food-insecure families received a turkey and food boxes filled with Thanksgiving dinner “fixins,” such as boxes of stuffing and potatoes, canned foods like gravy and cranberry sauce, vegetables and sweet potatoes.

Davis, his staff, his wife, Blayre Holmes Davis, and other volunteers worked alongside Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank volunteers and staff to load the Turkey Day delicacies in car trunks during the drive-thru event, so as to practice social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Davis said given the financial struggles placed upon Allegheny County residents due to the coronavirus, he wanted to make sure that a year filled with anxiety, concern and financial hardships wasn’t going to spoil the special holiday for people in the Mon Valley.

He wants his constituents to know that “giving back is what my office strives to do.”
