St. Sava Serbian Orthodox celebrating Advent with fish fry

St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church (McKeesport-Duquesne) has found a creative way to mark Advent.

Advent is the first season of the Christian church year, leading up to Christmas and including the four preceding Sundays. Many families and individuals use a daily Advent calendar to count the days until Christmas.

St. Sava’s McKeesport location at 901 Hartman St. will hold a fish fry to celebrate Advent.

Church spokeswoman Dorothy Ikach said the church came up with the idea after seeing “an overwhelming response” from the community during its recent Small Taste of Serbia fish fry and food fair.

The church held that event in mid-October to make up for revenues lost as a result of having to scale back or cancel fundraising efforts — such as selling Serbian cuisines during McKeesport’s International Village — earlier this year as a result of COVID-19.

The fish fry is set for 2 to 6 p.m. Dec. 4 at the church social hall. The event is take-out only, which means hungry patrons will need to pre-order by phone at 412-469-2955.
