In the midst of a global pandemic, Mon Valley residents are still finding ways to help their neighbors.
Separate community events will be held Saturday in Monessen and North Belle Vernon that will assist local families for the holiday season.
A turkey drive organized by North Belle Vernon resident Jenna Martis and city officials will be held at Monessen City Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Martis said she has made it a priority to give back as much as she can to her community.
When brainstorming ways to help, she heard an ad on the radio for a similar event in Pittsburgh.
“I thought it was strange that nothing like this had been organized closer to home here in the Valley,” she said. “So on a whim I decided to do it and am kind of flying by the seat of my pants, but it’s coming together.”
She contacted Monessen Mayor Matt Shorraw, who jumped on board.
“When she reached out I thought it was a great idea,” Shorraw said. “There is such a need in the city and our neighboring communities and it has been a tough year for everyone.
“This will be one less thing families have to worry about. I thought it was a good opportunity to provide community service in a safe way, with minimal contact.”
Martis thought Monessen would be a central location for Mon Valley families. So far, more than $500 has been donated to purchase turkeys and 15 families have registered.
While walk-ups will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, registration through email is encouraged to ensure organizers can provide enough turkeys.
Residents who would prefer to donate a bird instead of money can do so on the day of the event.
Non-perishable holiday side dishes such as boxed potatoes or canned vegetables, are also being accepted to provide families with a full holiday meal.
