The Mon River Fleet Alpha Leo Club members at McKeesport Area High School used their creativity this month to show their gratitude for the service and sacrifice of area veterans.

The Leo Club members, who are all health care apprentice students, completed a service project by creating, decorating and signing cards that will be distributed to area veterans.

Led by Carol Bray, MAHS Healthcare Apprenticeship Program instructor, Leo Club members were joined in the MAHS outdoor courtyard Tuesday by Mon River Fleet Lions Club members Monica Hancharik, Michele Matuch and MRF Lions President Jim Phillips.

They presented the cards to Steve Slinski, 33rd District Commander of American Legion Post 701 in White Oak and his wife Jackie Slinski, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Allegheny County District.

The Slinskis plan to distribute the cards, which bear images of the American flag and messages thanking veterans for their service and wishing them a happy Veterans Day, today to veterans at Post 701 and at other American Legion posts and events in the region.

Steve Slinski said he was touched by the gesture of the MAHS Mon River Fleet Leos.

“As a lifelong resident of McKeesport, I’m glad to see the next generation keeping the tradition we have here in McKeesport of supporting our veterans,” he said. “As a veteran, it makes us feel good inside.”
