Expenses reduced in MV Sewage Authority budget

The Mon Valley Sewage Authority recently released its approved budget for 2021, which includes a reduction in operating expenses.

The Authority’s total operating expense for 2020-21 is $1,472,600, a reduction of $3,211 from 2019-20.

Salaries for staff in operations represent an increase of $34,746, which brings the total for that department to $550,000, and salaries for administration staff increased $11,000, which brings the 2020-2021 total to $257,000.

Other numbers that didn’t see hikes are late fees, posting fees, credit and debit memos and line cleaning reserves.

In other business, the Authority discussed having a landlord as the only person who can open and maintain water service at a property.

According to the Authority’s office manager, Amy Naulty, the Authority of the Borough of Charleroi recently adopted the same policy.

“No longer will they allow tenants to sign up for water,” she said. “It has to stay in the owner’s name. I believe we need to follow suit because we can’t have it in two different names.

“It would cut down on the turn ons and turn offs that we have right now, and ultimately it falls back on the landlord, anyway. If they don’t pay the bill, it stays with the property. They’re going to get stuck with it anyway. They might as well just suck it up and do it from the beginning. It’s just a lot of paperwork that doesn’t need to happen.”
