Seventh-seeded Serra Catholic punched its ticket into the WPIAL Class 2A volleyball quarterfinals Thursday with a three-set sweep over No. 10 South Allegheny in a first-round matchup.

The Eagles (11-2) won by set scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-23. They now advance to face No. 2 Ellwood City in Monday’s quarterfinal round. Ellwood City earned a sweep of its own against No. 15 Ligonier Valley Thursday.

“I think we took care of business,” Serra Catholic head coach Keith Trahan said. “At times, I think we were really clicking and doing really well, but they served tough and our receive got a little shaky every once in awhile. You don’t like to see that, but we were able to power through, get the ball to our offense and get production.”

South Allegheny (9-3) ends its season after qualifying for the playoffs for the second consecutive year. A year ago, the Gladiators advanced to the postseason for the first time in program history after a 5-7 regular season.

“For us to take this huge step, it means the world. It’s a definite program changer,” SA head coach Jack Kelley said. “We’re super proud and I only have one senior leaving that played tonight, so we’re hoping for another good year next year.”
