After spending the last two seasons as boys basketball coach at Baldwin, Eugene Wilson has found a new home in the Mon Valley.

Wilson was hired Wednesday by a unanimous vote to become the new boys coach at Ringgold.

“I am really thankful for (athletic director) Laura Grimm and the Ringgold school board for the opportunity and their trust in myself, my credentials and my experience to allow me to be the next coach to represent Ringgold basketball,” said Wilson, who also coached at Wilkinsburg and Westinghouse in the Pittsburgh City League. “I really look forward to getting involved in the community and being a part of this for a very long time.”

Wilson, who helped lead Westinghouse to a City League championship and a pair of PIAA tournament wins in 2017-18, said there were two things in particular that persuaded him to apply for the job at Ringgold.

First, he pinpointed the support from those in the Ringgold community.

“It felt like the basketball program and all athletics had great support from a lot of different people in terms of the board, boosters and the community,” Wilson said. “I felt like it was a situation where if I had the opportunity to present myself, my philosophies, my strategies and how I run a program, and it was embraced, it could be a great match.”

Secondly, Wilson was impressed by the basketball knowledge of Grimm, a former basketball standout at Serra Catholic and Colgate.

“With her background in the sport of basketball, playing at Colgate and coaching as well, she understood all the ins and outs specifically from a basketball perspective in terms of running a program and what to look for,” Wilson said. “She was able to speak from her experience and what she saw the last couple of years in terms of the route the program needed to go in. It was very easy to embrace the message with her having such great experience and being involved in the game for such a very long time.”
