Daniel J. “Danny” Bergstedt, 73, of Monessen, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, at his residence. Danny was born in Char- leroi on Dec. 5, 1946, a son of the late David H. and Lena DeRocco Bergstedt Sr. Danny was Catholic by faith. He also belonged to the French Club and its golf league, the National Education Association, Pennsylvania Education Association, the Intermediate Unit One Education Association, the Pennsylvania Speech and Hearing Association and was a former member of Monessen Elks No. 773. Danny graduated from Monessen High School with the Class of 1964 and furthered his education at California University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees there. He also received his supervisory certification from West Virginia University. Danny was an avid sports fan, especially the Monessen Greyhounds and Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Pitt Panthers. He had served as a baseball coach for Monessen High School. He retired as chief negotiator for Intermediate Unit One Education Association, where he improved the lives of his colleagues. Surviving are his wife, Roberta “Bert” Caruso Bergstedt; daughter, Jodi Kirtley of England; son, Dean and wife, Beth Bergstedt of Canonsburg; grandchildren, Tyler Kirtley, Gabrielle Bergstedt, Taylor Bergstedt, Olivia Bergstedt and Devin Bergstedt; a great-grandson, Rowen Dizon; and a brother, Bill Bergstedt. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, David H. Bergstedt Jr. and Barry Bergstedt. Danny had a tremendous love of life, was a loyal friend to many and always brought a smile to those he greeted. He lived life to the fullest with joy and compassion. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC., 1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen, where friends will be welcomed from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at which time the memorial service will begin. All are asked to wear a face covering and practice social distancing. In lieu of flowers, the Bergstedt family request memorial contributions be made to the Monessen City School District and on your check memo, please note “Daniel Bergstedt Memorial Fund.” Online condolences may be conveyed to the Bergstedt family at www.rhomefuneralhom.com.
