The Rostraver Township Commissioners will consider purchasing an automated system for the police department.
The system will allow officers to send information directly from traffic stops and accident scenes to the police station and magisterial district judge’s office, as well as auto-fill reports by scanning a driver’s license.
The $27,000 purchase will be made possible by a $10,000 grant matched by the township and a $7,000 donation from Walt and Roxanne Vinoski of Vinoski Winery, which is located in the township.
Township Commissioner John Lorenzo said when the Vinoski donation was received, the township looked for a special project.
“We thought, what can we do with this money and add to it for a big ticket item?” Lorenzo said.
Lorenzo said the technology has been available for a while, but the department couldn’t afford it until now. Connections for the automated system will be placed in every police vehicle and officers will be able to use one of four laptop computers to input the information.
“It’s going to make them have a faster, more efficient system” Lorenzo said.
