Thanks to veterans, council members and residents from Monessen, the memory of deceased local military members will live on for years to come.
The Monessen War Veterans Memorial Trust will host a renaming ceremony for the Monessen City Park amphitheater, walking track and the three picnic shelters at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The event will take place in conjunction with the remembrance of the 30th anniversary of the Iraqi scud missile on the 14th Quartermaster Unit, and will honor veterans from the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.
The strike, which occurred in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia on Feb. 25, 1991, killed 43 soldiers and wounded 99. Thirteen of the fatalities and 43 of those wounded were members of the Greensburg-based 14th unit. One of the soldiers killed in the attack, Anthony E. Madison, was a resident of Monessen.
The amphitheater will be renamed the Lt. Col. Edward D’Alfonso Memorial Amphitheater, and the walking track will be renamed the Capt. John P. Onderko Memorial Walking Track.
Picnic shelter number one will be renamed the Specialist 4 Robert A. Lhota Memorial Shelter, shelter two will be renamed the Specialist 4 George A. Milika Memorial Shelter and shelter three will be renamed the Specialist Anthony E. Madison Memorial Shelter.
