With the Tri-County South Conference championship and a home playoff game at stake Saturday, California coach Ed Woods knew he needed contributions from all three phases.

The Trojans stuck with their blueprint for success this fall, rushing for 350 yards and playing opportunistic defense in a 49-20 win at Carmichaels. The Trojans forced four turnovers only allowed six points after halftime.

“We played a lot better in the second half, and I thought those turnovers really helped us out,” Woods said. “We rode the momentum and our offense was able to move the football all night. With this being a COVID-19 year, to win a conference championship is special. It’s a great accomplishment for the kids.

“The kids have stayed healthy, and their parents have kept them on the right path during the season. Our boosters and the administration have been so helpful for us in this unique season. Hats off to my coaching staff, and the high school principal has been so supportive and extremely helpful as it relates to the COVID-19 issue. It’s just a great accomplishment by all.”

Jaedan Zuzak was again the catalyst for the Trojans (5-0, 5-0) with 251 yards on 25 carries. The senior tailback had five rushing scores and a passing touchdown.

“I think everyone is going to remember the COVID season and how different it was,” Zuzak said. “As a team, we just stuck together and improved every week with hard work. We made something good out of a unique season.”

The game turned on Carmichaels’ second possession of the second half with Cal leading 21-14. The Mikes (5-1, 5-1) were driving deep into the visitors’ territory before Anthony Haschets stepped in front of a pass from Trenton Carter for an interception and returned it 57 yards to the 28-yard line.

“Carmichaels is probably the best passing offense we faced all year, so we knew we had to make some plays on defense,” Haschets said. “I recognized the formation and I just read the quarterback’s eyes. I stepped in front of the receiver and made a good decision for the interception.”
