Former Washington County Clerk of Courts Frank Scandale was sentenced Thursday to 24 months of house arrest and seven years probation after pleading guilty to charges related to the theft of $96,000 while in office.
Scandale, 52, entered a guilty plea to the charges against him, which included theft by failure to make required deposits, theft by unlawful taking and misapplication of government property. He was ordered to make restitution.
According to the affidavit filed with the charges, an investigation was launched following the annual audit conducted by the Washington County Controller’s office. The audit found 18 missing deposits as of Dec. 31, 2018, and six more as the audit continued into 2019. The total amount missing came to $96,716.04.
The affidavit listed 10 people interviewed as part of the investigation who reportedly made payments to the Clerk of Courts office that were later voided. Several staff members in the office were also interviewed, the affidavit stated.
