Leps blank Red Raiders behind Sassak

Belle Vernon fought through heavy wind Monday in Fayette County and came home with a 5-0 victory over Uniontown at Bill Power Stadium.
The match was originally set to be in Section 3-3A, but due to the Red Raiders (0-4) playing an independent schedule after the season was first postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, the Leopards (12-1, 10-1) had to settle for a non-section triumph.
“The conditions today with the wind were not great,” Belle Vernon coach Rob Miele said. “I don’t want to say we just wanted to get through the game, but the biggest thing was to get out of here healthy and with the win.”
Belle Vernon has clinched the section crown, which gives Miele’s squad back-to-back titles for the first time in school history, but he is eager for Wednesday’s match against Thomas Jefferson.
BVA has won five section championships.
“We had a huge win against LH on Thursday,” Miele said. “I don’t think the score was indicative of the type of team they are. We just played really well, and then we have TJ on Wednesday. I don’t want to say this was a trap game, but we talked at halftime about getting through this game without any injuries.”
