Homefield advantage has been a little bit different for teams this fall with spectator limitations and the other circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even so, California was just looking forward to having a home game after not playing at home the first four weeks of the season.
The Trojans broke open the game after an early 6-6 tie and amassed 585 total yards en route to a 65-22 triumph over Jefferson-Morgan Friday.
Three of the first four games for the Trojans (4-0, 4-0) were on the road and their Week 2 home game against West Greene on Sept. 18 was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.
“It was nice to finally be at home tonight, but we still have a lot of work to do,” Cal coach Ed Woods said. “I was glad we didn’t have to get on a bus tonight and travel. It was nice to see the band, the fans and the community come out and get that support. I knew the kids were excited to play at home.
“But we’ve got a big game against Carmichaels next week. We need to clean some things up and the penalties tonight really killed our momentum. Carmichaels is a good football team and you can’t shoot yourself in the foot with penalties or mistakes. We’ve got to be solid in all three phases.”
Jaedan Zuzak, who came into the game with 13 total touchdowns, had a monster night for Cal, totaling 19 carries for 440 yards and seven touchdowns.
“It started out with the O-line and them opening up holes for me,” Zuzak said. “Once I got past the holes, it was just me using my speed and my vision. I worked my butt off during the offseason with early mornings and long nights. This is my senior year and I want to put in the work to improve every week.”
