With 35 seconds left in its Section 2-A match against Trinity Christian, Serra Catholic watched all its hard work for nearly 80 minutes go out the window.
The visiting Falcons had just tied the game at 1-1 and had stolen the momentum.
However, AJ Mejalli found Nick Almeter for his second goal of the night with just 4.4 seconds to play, securing a 2-1 victory for Serra Catholic Thursday.
The win evened the season series with Trinity Christian (7-4, 6-3) and gives Serra Catholic (6-4, 5-4) a shot at the third slot in the section race.
“My predecessor who I used to coach with, Don Sable, always used to preach about the dangerous minute, the minute of play right after a goal,” SC head coach Chad Bruns said. “It is when the team is either down or too excited from scoring and not really back into the game. It gives an opportunity to take advantage of that.
“Credit to the boys for pushing through and trying to make one last push and credit to Nick for being composed enough to take it on his shoulders and not let it get to overtime.”
