The Ringgold tennis team doesn’t have the roster it had last season, thanks mostly to the coronavirus.
But thanks to senior captain Courtney Berdar and its other co-captains, the Rams still found a way to have a successful campaign.
The Rams closed the home portion of this season’s schedule Monday with a 4-1 win over visiting Avella before ending the season tonight at Trinity in a non-section match.
“Our ranks were decimated by COVID-19,” Ringgold coach Sally Phillips said. “Last year we had a JV team that we couldn’t even get everyone in matches because there were so many of them. Now we have a lot of players doing home school and it was tough to get practices and workouts going. That’s where Courtney and the other girls came in, working out on their own in an unofficial capacity. It’s really helped them stay sharp.”
Looking sharp for the Rams Monday was Julia Corey at second singles. Corey breezed past Avella’s Katelyn Frank with a 6-1, 6-0 win in second singles.
“Julia has been a solid No. 2 for us,” Phillips said. “I think her biggest attribute has been her positive attitude. She’s worked hard at her game and has really been striking the ball hard.”
