Church offers A Taste of Serbia

Many fish frys had to be canceled or scaled back this year because of COVID-19, but St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of McKeesport-Duquesne has found a creative way to respect the restrictions while raising money for the parish and  providing a taste of its heritage.

Parishioners hope local foodies will find joy in A Small Taste of Serbia, a takeout-only food event featuring a selection of Serbian favorites.

The event will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today and Saturday at the McKeesport church, located at 901 Hartman St. Spokeswoman Dot Ikach said the church social hall will serve as the “walk up, take out” site, and phone orders are not being accepted.

The church is offering a packed menu and specials each day.

Today’s special is the popular St. Sava fish sandwich — a 12-ounce hand-breaded, deep-fried haddock fillet served on a hard roll. The sandwich costs $8, and Ikach said it “ranks number one among Lenten fish fries by The Incline voting website and by the Codfather, a local food critic.”

Other Friday specials are breaded shrimp, six for $7, and french fries for $3.

On Saturday, the St. Sava Men’s Club will offer its “famous” hot sausage sandwich with onions and green peppers in a tomato sauce. The $5 sandwich, according to posts on the church’s social media pages, is a favorite at the St. Sava Men’s Club oldies dance.

The International Village classic lamb sandwich, which costs $8 and features juicy, slow-roasted, boneless sliced lamb served on a hard roll, will be available both days of the event.
