Charleroi girls pound Monessen

A pair of talented freshmen continue to lead the Charleroi girls soccer team, but the Cougars are starting to find some secondary scoring that will help them in the long run.

Charleroi blasted Monessen, 10-3, Saturday as Bella Carroto (four) and Boots DeUnger (three) combined for seven goals.

“We had a solid performance and I thought we really moved the ball well,” Cougars head coach Traci Fleming said. “It was nice to see some scoring other than Carroto and DeUnger today.”

Monessen jumped to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Kinsey Wilson, who finished with two in the game. Her goal, though, woke up the Cougars’ offense.

Carroto scored the next three goals within a span of nine minutes to tally a hat trick. The first was assisted by Sophia Iacovino and the next two were helped by DeUnger.

Sophomore Leena Henderson scored her first career goal off an assist by Ella Sypolt with 13 minutes left in the first half to make it 4-1.

DeUnger, who missed a couple of golden opportunities early in the game, finally found the back of the net in the 28th minute, taking a nice feed from Carroto to make it 5-1 at the half.

In the second half, Carroto added her fourth before Aaliyah Rice made a nice run and trickled one in past Cougars keeper Addison Conrad to cut the lead to 6-3.
