Liberty Boro: Trick or treat decision left up to citizens

On the heels of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deeming trick or treat a “higher risk” fall holiday season activity, Liberty Boro Council announced it won’t be making an official call about approving or prohibiting the annual Halloween tradition.

In a Savvy Citizen community bulletin that was also posted to the borough Facebook page, council said trick or treat is “not a municipally sponsored event” and that “it is up to you and your family to make the best decision for you.”

Savvy Citizen is an electronic calendar and mass notification system that enables local governments to relay important information to their citizens and surrounding communities.

“If you are not comfortable participating, you are not expected to,” the council wrote. “If you are participating, Liberty Boro’s tradition is for Trick or Treat to be Halloween night, Saturday, October 31 from 6 to 8 p.m.”

The council urges participating residents to follow CDC and state and county health department guidelines of wearing a mask and staying at least 6 feet apart.

“Remember that if your neighbors do not have their lights on, they would probably rather not have visitors and we all need to respect that, especially now,” council wrote. “Try to limit your group size and consider placing your Halloween treats outside in a bowl on your porch or at the end of your driveway to keep that social distance.

“Wear a mask if you choose to hand out treats at the door. Sanitize or wash those hands and stay home if you’re not feeling well.”
