Greensburg CC adds to Serra Catholic’s growing pains

Chad Bruns knew there would be some growing pains for his Serra Catholic soccer team this season.

With nine different players playing new positions this year, those growing pains have been felt immediately.

A day after suffering a 6-0 loss to Winchster Thurston, the Eagles were on the losing end once again, falling to Greensburg Central Catholic, 4-1, in Section 2-A play Tuesday.

“It’s been an awkward preparation with all the COVID-19 restrictions and the schedules shifting around,” Bruns said. “The first two nights have been a learning experience. There’s a lot of things to work on, a lot of things to learn from.”

The Centurions (3-0, 3-0) firmly dominated play, putting 16 shots on net, as compared to Serra Catholic’s five.

Carlo Denis collected a hat trick, and scored his first of the night in the third minute off a cross. About 14 minutes later, Denis added another. With just under four minutes left in the first half, Jacob Gretz scored to bring the halftime score to 3-0.

Throughout the half, Greensburg Central Catholic put constant pressure on the Eagles’ defense, while Serra Catholic (0-2, 0-2) struggled to get the ball in dangerous positions, outside of a shot in front of the net from Aaron Muschar in the fourth minute.

“GCC’s a good team and they’re gonna capitalize if you give them sloppy mistakes. I thought we were a little too loose with marking,” said Bruns. “Their first two goals came from crosses in, and we just need to be tighter and in position and ready to defend those crosses. Outside of those two, I thought the third was just a good player making a good play.”
