The Mon Valley was in the national spotlight over the weekend as a filmmaker received an Emmy Award for his documentary focusing on a local military hero.

The WQED documentary film “Homecoming: Sgt. Hamilton’s Long Journey” was awarded the Emmy for best human interest program/special Saturday evening as part of the Television Academy’s 72nd Emmy Awards celebration.

The 30-minute documentary aired on WQED in November last year and was written and produced by 1972 Ringgold High School graduate David Solomon.

It was the 39th Emmy award Solomon has received for his skills as a filmmaker.

“If you’re doing stories to win awards, that’s not the right way to go about it,” he said. “You do these stories to preserve a little bit of history and to let the public know of these stories that mean a lot to other people.”

“Homecoming: Sgt. Hamilton’s Long Journey” tells the story of Sgt. Vernon Hamilton, a 19-year-old Army Air Corpsman from Monongahela whose plane was shot down over Germany during World War II. The plane and remains of the three crew members were declared unrecoverable.

Hamilton’s remains were identified decades later when his 1943 Monongahela High School ring was discovered at an excavation site by an excavation and forensics team.

The documentary features interviews with family members and captures Hamilton’s homecoming tribute in April 2019 that was organized by the people of Monongahela.
