The Ringgold School District offers free breakfasts and lunches, but some parents say the meals aren’t reaching enough students.
At Wednesday’s school board meeting, Ringgold directors were alerted that some students and parents are having difficulty getting to the high school to receive the meals. The district recently announced new distribution sites where students can pick up free meals.
“There are no sidewalks and no buses to the high school,” Chantal Bey, who has two children in virtual learning and two others in classroom learning, told the school board. “People don’t have access. A lot of the virtual families aren’t making it up there.”
According to Bey, that means hundreds of students aren’t receiving the meals.
“Compare the numbers … the numbers aren’t there,” she said. “We need a distribution site in each Ringgold area.”
On Sept. 8, the district announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had extended the Summer Food Service Program, allowing the district to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students until December or until funding runs out.
The free breakfasts and lunches are standard meals that meet national school lunch requirements.
