Elizabeth Forward had a dominant start to its season with a 45-0 victory over visiting Brownsville in Interstate Conference action Friday at Warriors Stadium.
DaVontay Brownfield scored on his first three carries to give EF a 21-0 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter. He finished with 93 yards on eight carries and three touchdowns.
“Overall, it was a good team effort,” Elizabeth forward coach Mike Collodi said. “Anytime you pitch a shutout and score 45 points, it took everybody involved on the team.
“Up front, we did a good job blocking for Brownfield, and he ran the ball effectively. The defense, obviously, played lights out when you pitch a shutout. I think all in all, it was a good team effort.”
Chase Whatton extended Elizabeth Forward’s lead to 28-0 on a 3-yard run with 11:09 left in the first.
Andrew Smith, who was 6 of 6 on PATs, booted a 30-yard field goal with 3:03 left in the quarter for a 31-0 advantage for the Warriors (1-0, 1-0).
Elizabeth Forward pushed its lead to 38-0 in the third quarter when Nico Mrvos pulled in a 26-yard touchdown reception from Evan Lewis. The short drive was set up after Whatton forced a fumble that Nick Murphy recovered.
Mrvos had five receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown. Lewis was 5 of 10 for 81 yards and a score.
“I thought Evan made good decisions,” Collodi said.
