Charleroi decides to keep current guidelines in place

Although a federal judge has ruled shutdown orders and restrictions on gatherings imposed by Gov. Tom Wolf unconstitutional, the Charleroi Area School Board will continue to enforce mandates and recommendations until an appeals court says otherwise.

During a business meeting Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Ed Zelich said he has received dozens of phone calls in regard to attendance at sporting events.

“There is an appeal that will give us clear direction, but that will take time,” Zelich said. “Until then, we will continue to follow the governor’s orders.”

Football, soccer and volleyball each have different restrictions. Football players, cheerleaders and band members each receive two tickets to every home football game. Whomever the students give the tickets to still must pay $5 for admission at the gate. No tickets will be sold to the general public.

There will be 180 general admission tickets sold for soccer, but students and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Because volleyball is indoors, each player will receive two tickets and fans will sit in the upper bleachers.

Social distancing, masks and other guidelines must be followed by anyone on school property.

“A lot of parents, most parents, have more comfort in knowing they are able to see their children compete,” Zelich said.
