Rostraver Township to use donated land for recreation

Nearly 10.5 acres of land adjacent to the DiVirgilio Sports Complex has been donated to Rostraver Township.
The commissioners Wednesday voted to accept the land from S.W. Shuster, the company which is constructing some 120 homes in that area. The donated parcel will be used for recreation.
Commission Chairman John Lorenzo said the land will be used for recreation — with a lot of discussions to come. Potential future uses include soccer, softball and baseball fields and a playground, Lorenzo said.
“We’re due to break ground on our walking track at the end of this month and it would provide the space for that track to loop,” Lorenzo said of the donated parcel.
Playground construction is nearly complete in Collinsburg in the Phase 1 Small Parks program. Most of the work has been done in the past month, with construction of a picnic pavilion to be completed.
“We’re continuing to invest in our community. You don’t have to be trapped in your house,” Lorenzo said.
Lorenzo said the next phase of the Small Parks program will be to build a park in the Pricedale area where six homes which had been prone to flooding were purchased by the township and demolished.
“We’re investing in these areas, as we look at our comprehensive plan that have been ignored,” Lorenzo said.
A public meeting to update the comprehensive plan is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Pavilion 1 in Cedar Creek Park. Lorenzo said the township is hoping to get as much public input as possible on the plan.
