Drive-by in Elizabeth Twp. will raise food pantry funds

Greenock United Methodist Church in Elizabeth Township will do a “Drive By & Donate” cash or checks to benefit local food pantries and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The “Drive by & Donate” will be held from  3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church, 1213 Greenock Buena Vista Road, Elizabeth Township.

“The generosity of the community and church members has been overwhelming with more than $5,000 total raised at two prior collections this spring. Business closures and job loss due to the coronavirus has placed unprecedented financial pressures on the community and food banks,” said Debbie Popp Gilbert of the church’s Worship and Outreach Committee.

Families now face the additional burden of back-to-school costs for school supplies and clothing, she said.

The Rev. Lori Walters, the church’s pastor, said the drive shows the love and gives people hope that others care.

Every $1 raised helps to provide up to five meals for families and individuals. So, that means the donations will provide almost 25,000 meals, Gilbert said.

Central Food Pantry of Elizabeth Township, Elizabeth Boro Food Pantry  and Round Hill Presbyterian Church Food Pantry will again receive the donations with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Volunteers will be stationed so donors may drive through the church parking to deposit their cash or checks into baskets held by volunteers. The donations will be divided among the food bank and pantries listed unless donors submit a specific group in writing.

Donations may also be mailed to the individual organizations. Contributions may also be given through the Greater Pittsburgh Go Fund site.

Families with an immediate need for food should call 211, which can be accessed by phone or computer. This is a free, confidential referral and information helpline that connects people of all ages and communities to the health and human services they need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
