Cub Scouts’ car wash provides good, clean fun

The first fundraiser for a pack of area Cub Scouts was a bubbling success over the weekend.

Pack 1542, based out of Mingo Presbyterian Church, took over the parking lot of the Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday, eager to get to work for its first-ever car wash.

About two hours in, with many of the youngsters covered head to toe in sudsy water, they got a surprise visit from two Monongahela police officers who showed up to have their SUVs cleaned up.

The car wash was a first for the pack, but it was successful enough to warrant another event next month. In the span of three hours, the boys washed more than 70 cars.

Assistant Cub Master Jeff Lytle said it was a great experience.

“They were busy,” he said. “We did really well and it was all through donations.

“It was really fantastic to have them all together again because some of these boys have been friends for a really long time. It’s a family.”

Cub Scout Pack 1542 is a volunteer organization run by the parents, guardians and other family members of the boys who make up the pack.

Most of the kids in Pack 1542 live in and around the Mon Valley area, including Finleyville, Union Township, Nottingham Township and New Eagle.

About 40 cubs get together monthly to camp, fish, hike, bowl or participate in a host of other community activities.

This year, activities and fundraisers for the pack slowed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it didn’t keep them apart for too long.
