Several area municipalities will benefit from grants funded by the PA Small Water and Sewer Program.
The Municipal Authority of Washington Township in Fayette County will get $968,880 for an interconnection with the Municipal Authority of Belle Vernon in Washington Township.
The Municipal Authority of Washington Township only has an emergency interconnection with the Borough of Charleroi, currently, which can only serve the Washington County portion of the authority’s system.
The new interconnection would provide an emergency backup source of water for the Fayette County portion of the authority’s water distribution system.
“This completed project is vital to the community, as it will provide a safe, reliable and efficient system for the water treatment plant for years to come,” said state Rep. Bud Cook, R-West Pike Run Township.
The PA Small Water and Sewer Program was established by the General Assembly to award grants to municipalities and municipal authorities for water, sewer, storm water and flood control projects.
The Municipal Authority of the Borough of Smithton was awarded a grant of $29,452 to install a new pump and process instrumentation — including pH, dissolved oxygen and UV remittance — at the wastewater treatment plant. The new equipment will enhance the operation of the plant.
“We all need a safe and reliable source of water, so I’m pleased to announce this grant and how it will offset the cost of providing water to the community,” said state Rep. Eric Davanzo, R-South Huntingdon. “Even during the challenging financial times so many people are experiencing, we still need to make important investments like this one.”
