First Commonwealth Bank announced this week it will consolidate 29 offices in Pennsylvania and Ohio, including the McKeesport location.
Spokesman Jonathan Longwill said Friday the bank attributes the consolidations to more customers using online and mobile banking and complications caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
“For years, our customers have demonstrated a transformation in how they do their banking. We’ve watched transactions move progressively away from the branch and toward online and mobile,” Longwill said. “While much of that was accelerated by the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, these are trends we’ve been watching evolve for years.
“Even pre-pandemic, we’ve watched teller transactions decrease 15-20% annually over the past four to five years as branches become less of a place to do transactions. During that same time period, our digital banking adoption has tripled with almost three quarters of our customer base using digital banking, and our call center and online chat volumes have experienced similar increases with more customers interacting with us online and by phone.”
